ExecTec on Getting the Message Out

What does it take to communicate a message? Marshall McLuhan wrote that "The Medium is the Message”, in this he was trying to get people to look beyond the both the medium and the message and consider the effect of the communications. Does the use of both medium and message evoke or even provoke the desired result. What is the goal and did the communication achieve that result?

Nedra Kline Weinreich of Weinreich Communications (who my friend and ExecTec member Karen introduced me to sometime back) writes about getting ones message out through the media that "while many consider the media a fearsome adversary, it can be a powerful ally if approached strategically."

I think the same can be said of the vast array of communication tools that exist.

Nedra developed this post to advise a client with a critical message on how best to communicate their message to the media. Obviously most or all of these question are well considered by anyone trying to communicate via any medium. Interesting that the base of the questions focus us on (why, what, who, how and where/which):

Why do you want media attention?

What is your "news?"

What type of media coverage do you want?

Whom will you contact in the media?

How will you contact the media?

What do you have to offer?

How will you respond when the media call you?

Which media strategies can your available resources support?

What other sources of free publicity are available in your community?

How will you know if you've been effective?

So with that as food for thought, are you communicating your message or your company’s message in a manner that is effective? Have we all become lost in a sea of communication options and lost sight of what is important to be effective or even what the goal of our communication is?

Join us for what is sure to be a topic that will create a lot of passionate discussion.

As always there is no better way to meet and connect with other executives then over dinner and conversation. $21 in advance via PayPal or $25 at the event gets you a full dinner, drink and the best networking around.
